The first North American pope in history, Pope Leo XIV, said his first Mass as pope on Friday in the Sistine Chapel with the cardinals who chose him to replace Pope Francis and carry on his social justice-minded legacy. As he made his way to the altar with Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” behind it, Leo, dressed in white robes, blessed the cardinals.
Additionally, it was the first time Leo had spoken in public in English, having previously solely done so in Italian and Spanish. At the beginning of his first Mass, Leo XIV spoke to the cardinals and pleaded for their help, saying, “You have called me to carry the cross and to be blessed.”
Pope Leo XIV received well wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On X, Modi stated, “The Indian people extend their heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. His appointment as head of the Catholic Church comes at a critical juncture in the promotion of the values of service, solidarity, peace, and harmony. India is still dedicated to maintaining communication and interaction with the Holy See.
