The first North American pope in history, Pope Leo XIV, said his first Mass as pope on Friday in the Sistine Chapel with the cardinals who chose him to replace Pope Francis and carry on his social justice-minded legacy. As he made his way to the altar with Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” behind it, Leo, dressed in white robes, blessed the cardinals.

Pope Leo XIV received well wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On X, Modi stated, “The Indian people extend their heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. His appointment as head of the Catholic Church comes at a critical juncture in the promotion of the values of service, solidarity, peace, and harmony.
