Here’s the Cannes 2025 dress code for the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings.

The 78th edition of the Festival de Cannes unfurls its carpet for film enthusiasts on May 13. Every year, the international film festival celebrates cinema from across the globe.

Before every Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screening, the red carpet lights up with celebrities making a statement in their stylish ensembles. From voluminous gowns to dazzling diamonds, the Cannes Red Carpet has seen it all.

However, this year’s dress code guidelines for the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings has got everyone wondering if it applies to the celebrities attending the film screenings too. Are we ready for a Cannes red carpet with no drama, no trains and no voluminous gowns?

From India this year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar, Janhvi Kapoor, Ishan Khatter, Nitanshi Goel, Payal Kapadia, and Vishal Jethwa, among others, are expected to grace the 78th Festival de Cannes red carpet. This year will mark Alia Bhatt and Nitanshi Goel’s Cannes debut. Filmmaker Payal Kapadia was announced as one of the jury members for the 78th Festival de Cannes.

Here’s the Cannes 2025 dress code for the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings, shared on the Festival de Cannes official website.

• For the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings taking place around 7 and 10 p.m., which are attended by the artistic teams, evening wear (long dress, tuxedo) is required.
• Alternatively, you may also wear “a little black dress,” a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants, elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel (no sneakers), a black or navy-blue suit with bow-tie or dark-colored tie.
• Tote bags, backpacks or large bags are prohibited during gala screenings. Lockers, open until 12:30 a.m., are available near the Gare Maritime.
• For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival.
• Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted.
• The Festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit Red Carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.
• For all other screenings, proper attire is sufficient.

The 78th Festival de Cannes will take place in Cannes from 13th to 24th May 2025.
