
KOZHIKODE: The Sports and Youth Affairs Department and the Tourism Department are jointly setting up 'Open Gyms' at tourist destinations.
It will be implemented at seven places in the first phase. There will also be interlocked walkways, seating, lights, etc. The contract has been awarded to Excel Engineering Company of Tirunelveli to install the equipment. Sports Department officials have stated that the construction will be completed within a month and handed over to the Tourism Department.
The Sports Kerala Foundation is in charge of the construction. The project cost is Rs 148.26 lakh. The Sports Department estimates the cost of one open gym to be around Rs 10 lakh. 14 high-quality equipment will be installed. Children to the elderly can exercise. A management committee will be tasked with preventing anti-social elements from destroying it.
The equipment in the open gym is air walker, chest press (double), triple twister, leg press (double), rower, shoulder builder (double), sit up board, sky walker, surf board, cross trainer (double), back extension, push up bar and dip station, horse rider, single bar.
Open gyms will also be set up in panchayats. Out of the 124 playgrounds in the first phase of the 'One Panchayat, One Playground' project, open gyms will be set up in 16 places out of the 69 that have received administrative approval. More fitness centres will also be opened in public places.
