De Niro's Bold Remarks

At the Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony, Hollywood legend Robert De Niro criticized US President Donald Trump, labeling him a 'philistine' for his proposed film tariff. During his acceptance speech for a lifetime achievement award, De Niro urged attendees to protest against Trump's policies.

The 81-year-old actor shared the spotlight at the Grand Theatre Lumiere with other Oscar winners, including Halle Berry, Juliette Binoche, and Quentin Tarantino, who presented the award alongside longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio.

De Niro expressed his concerns, stating, 'Trump has reduced funding and support for the arts, humanities, and education. Now, he has introduced a 100 percent tariff on films made outside the US.' He emphasized that while creativity cannot be quantified, it seems that a tariff can be imposed on it, calling on all who value freedom to stand against Trump.

Festival Highlights

Tarantino, who began his career at Cannes, officially inaugurated the festival, which will continue until May 24, with a dramatic mic drop before the audience enjoyed the opening film, the French comedy 'Leave One Day.'

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria, Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, and US director Sean Baker, who won last year's Palme d'Or for 'Anora,' were spotted on the red carpet prior to the festival's commencement.

German supermodel Heidi Klum made a statement in a pink gown resembling flower petals, which trailed behind her. Fortunately, she was allowed on the red carpet despite recent changes to the dress code that prohibited nudity and excessively long trains.

Indian director Payal Kapadia also made an appearance at the opening ceremony as a member of the jury panel. This visit comes a year after she made history as the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix for her debut feature film 'All We Imagine As Light,' a collaboration between India and France. Kapadia wore a stylish blue blouse paired with a red asymmetrical skirt designed by Payal Khandwala, who also styled her for the Golden Globes 2025 red carpet earlier this year.
