Kangana Ranaut's Social Media Controversy

On Thursday, Kangana Ranaut, the actor and Member of Parliament from Mandi, revealed that she was instructed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda to remove her social media post regarding a statement made by former US President Donald Trump. In her post, Ranaut had criticized Trump for advising Apple CEO Tim Cook against expanding manufacturing operations in India.

Ranaut expressed regret for sharing her personal views, stating, “I regret posting that very personal opinion of mine, as per instructions I immediately deleted it from Instagram as well.”

Earlier that day, Ranaut had questioned the rationale behind Trump's comments to Cook, drawing comparisons between the US President and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This incident followed Trump's remarks at an event in Qatar, where he claimed he had told Cook that India was capable of managing its own affairs and that Apple would increase its production in the US due to his discussions with Cook.

Trump's comments were made in the context of Apple's efforts to diversify its manufacturing away from China, where the majority of its iPhones are produced, amid ongoing tariffs and geopolitical tensions, as reported by a media outlet.

Apple does not currently manufacture smartphones in the US but aims to source a significant portion of its iPhone supply from India by the end of next year to lessen its reliance on China.

This is not the first instance where Ranaut has expressed regret over her social media opinions since her election as Mandi MP in June 2024.

In September, the BJP publicly disapproved of her comments advocating for the reinstatement of farm laws that were repealed by the government in 2021 following widespread protests.

Ranaut stated on September 23, “I understand it may become controversial, but I think these farmer-welfare-oriented laws should return. Farmers should demand these laws themselves. Just as farmers in other regions are benefiting, there should be no obstacles to their development.”

Following her remarks, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified that Ranaut's statements were her own and did not represent the party's stance on the farm bills.

The BJP had also previously stated that Ranaut was neither permitted nor authorized to make policy statements on behalf of the party, especially after she suggested that the farmers' protests could lead to chaos similar to that of Bangladesh.
