Calcutta HC directs continuation of central force deployment in riot-hit Murshidabad

The court noted insufficient police presence during the unrest and suggested the state recruit more officers. Kolkata: A division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed that the CAPF deployment will continue in the sensitive pockets in Murshidabad district, where communal violence had erupted last month, killing three.

While hearing a case on the communal violence over protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad on Thursday, the court observed that the optimum police forces were not present on the day of violence in Murshidabad,

In today’s hearing, the court suggested that CAPF will keep guarding Murshidabad and the state has been suggested to recruit more police forces.

The HC suggested that the state should recruit more police forces as the situation totally went out of control due to inadequate deployment of police forces.

Three reports were submitted today, including two reports were submitted by SIT of Police and one by the committee formed by the High Court

On April 12, the HC ordered the deployment of central armed police forces (CAPF) personnel in the district to keep the situation under control.

The division bench also enquired if the state government has paid compensation to the victims of communal violence at Murshidabad as per the legal provisions.
