Baked beans are a staple part of British , whether they're eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have been loved as they are for generations but more experimental may want to try and add more flavour to them.

While many people add things like salt, pepper and chilli flakes to their baked beans, there is one slightly more unusual ingredient which can help transform their flavour and texture. Just a small amount of it can help add a nice crunch as well as compliment the sweetness of the beans.

Pistachio has hit the headlines recently for it's involvement in the viral "Dubai chocolate bar". However, the seeds, which come from a tree in the cashew family, make a great addition to traditional baked beans.

As well as simply sprinkling them on top before serving, there are two separate methods to integrate pistachios into baked beans. These include stirring them in and creating a pesto for a more flavourful option.

The simpler method involves roughly chopping and crushing pistachios before stirring them into cooked baked beans. This helps give them a nice cruch and unique flavour.

Meanwhile, the recommends using pistachios as part of a pesto recipe. This involves blending them with olive oil, garlic, basil, Parmesan cheese and salt. The pesto can then be tossed into the cooked beans before serving.

The Jolly Hog website says pistachio adds a "lovely punchiness" to traditional baked beans. It says: "We'd recommend serving the pistachio pesto with some toasted sourdough, or even simply spooned on top of the beans for an extra flavour kick!"

Pistachios have been dubbed the new by scientists. Research discovered that just 57 grams each day can help keep the optician away.

Dr Tammy Scott said: "Our study shows that pistachios aren't just a tasty snack - they may be great for your eyes. Eating a small amount every day can help protect your vision, especially as you get older."
