One famous candy has made news in Jaipur, a city renowned for its rich cultural and culinary legacy, by renaming its treats in a symbolic gesture of patriotism. In a daring move, Tyohaar Sweets, a high-end confectionery known for its artisanal and often lavish offerings, renamed all sweets that had the suffix “Pak,” which is typically used to indicate richness or preparation in confections.

Tyohaar Sweets owner Anjali Jain is leading the effort, telling Local18 that the spirit of patriotism should dwell inside every individual rather than only at the border. “For this reason, we have chosen to eliminate the word ‘Pak’ from the names of our candies and substitute it with more patriotic and culturally relevant terms,” she said.

Moti Shree, Aam Shree, Gond Shree, and Mysore Shree are the new names for names like Moti Pak, Aam Pak, Gond Pak, and Mysore Pak. Swarn Shree and Chandi Shree are the new names for even the store’s most rare items, Swarn Bhasm Pak and Chandi Bhasm Pak, which are covered in gold and silver leaf, respectively.

The action was taken in reaction to a more general mood among patrons, many of whom apparently felt uneasy with the term “Pak” being used in any situation, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam terror assault and Operation Sindoor. “We made this change at the request of our customers,” Jain said.

Rebranding in the culinary industry has not gone ignored. Tyohaar’s example is also being followed by a number of other confectioneries in Jaipur, indicating a rising trend in symbolic solidarity via consumer decisions.

Although the term “Pak,” which comes from Sanskrit and means “to cook,” has long been used in Indian cuisine, its removal has more to do with current geopolitics than etymology. The new titles provide a feeling of pleasure and pride to Anjali Jain and her colleagues. “It feels like home when we say ‘Shree’ or ‘Bharat,'” she remarked.

With more than 125 different types of candies available all year round, Tyohaar Sweets has long distinguished itself in Jaipur’s congested confectionery market with its luxurious selection and seasonal inventions. Even centuries-old culinary traditions are susceptible to the currents of contemporary nationalism, as shown by the shop’s quick adjustment to the shifting mood of its customers.
