Mumnai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been instructed by Deputy Chief Minister and Mumbai City Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde to finish all existing drain-cleaning projects in Mumbai city and its suburbs by June 7, 2025. Shinde stressed that the remaining work has to be finished within the next 15 days, pointing out that 85% of major drains and 65% of small drains have already been cleaned. Additionally, he issued a warning that authorities who fail to complete this important pre-monsoon work on time would face severe consequences.

He emphasized that in order to avoid floods and re-siltation, silt extracted from drains had to be transported and dumped at approved locations within 48 hours.

Shinde started his investigation at many important sites, such as T Junction in Dharavi, Nehru Nagar Drain in Wadala, and Usha Nagar and Usha Nagar Complex in Bhandup. Senior public authorities and civic leaders, such as former MLA and Chairman of the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple Trust Sada Sarvankar, MLA Tukaram Kate, former MP Rahul Shewale, and important BMC personnel, were with him.

“Even though the monsoon arrived early, 85% of Mumbai’s major drains and 65% of its minor drains have already been cleaned,” Shinde told the reporters. We are certain that the job will be finished on schedule with 15 days left.

He also emphasized how the BMC and the railway authorities work together to deploy robots and artificial intelligence (AI) for desilting activities, particularly under railway culverts. High-capacity pumping units have been placed at 422 waterlogging-prone locations that the city has identified. Ten small pumping stations and two storage tanks have also been turned on to combat monsoon floods.

Shinde also toured Vikhroli’s landslide-prone Surya Nagar neighborhood, where he gave the BMC instructions to erect safety nets. He also ordered the relocation of those living in the high-risk area to safer areas.

The Deputy Chief Minister wrapped up his tour to the municipal sanitation workers’ settlement at Kasarwadi in Dadar. He went around the study centers, the nearby Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Davakhana (clinic), and other facilities created for the locals’ sake.
