IMD Issues Red Alert For Delhi-NCR For Severe Thunderstorm With Moderate Rain Tonight

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday evening issued a red warning under its Nowcast system for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), valid for the next 2–3 hours. According to news agency ANI, the weather body has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by severe thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong surface winds reaching speeds of 60 to 100 km/h.

“Red warning issued in Nowcast for Delhi and NCR valid for next 2-3 hours. Light to moderate rain accompanied with severe thunderstorm/lightning/hailstorm, and strong surface wind (60-100 kmph) likely to occur,” IMD said.

Earlier, IMD forecast thunderstorms in the national capital accompanied by rain. On Saturday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, it said. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.4 degrees Celsius, 1.7 notches below the season's average, it added.

A 'yellow' alert has been issued for the city as wind, thunderstorms, and light rain has been predicted on Sunday, the IMD said. The relative humidity was recorded at 49 per cent at 5.30 pm.

The air quality remained in the moderate category at 6 pm on Saturday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 141, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.

According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
