Kim Kardashian has expressed her gratitude to French authorities after a court convicted several people involved in a 2016 robbery where she was held at gunpoint in a Paris hotel and robbed of $10 million worth of jewelry.
In a statement, Kardashian said the robbery was “the most terrifying experience of my life” and thanked the French legal system for bringing justice. “Although I will never forget what happened, I believe in healing, growth, and second chances,” she said.
The robbery happened in October 2016 while Kardashian was in Paris for Fashion Week. Five masked men dressed as police officers broke into her hotel suite in the middle of the night. They tied her up, taped her mouth, and held a gun to her head before stealing her jewelry, including a $3.9 million diamond ring given to her by then-husband Kanye West.
Ten people were on trial, including Aomar Ait Khedache, the leader of the group, who is now 69 years old. He was sentenced to three years in prison and five years suspended. Because of the time he has already served and his poor health—he is now deaf and unable to speak—he will not go back to prison. Other members of the group also received light sentences, with most of them avoiding further jail time.
Two suspects were found not guilty. One of the robbers did not attend the trial because he is undergoing cancer treatment. The court explained that because of the robbers’ age and health conditions, it would not be fair to send them back to jail.
French media called the group the “Grandpa Gang” because most of them are in their 60s and 70s. Prosecutors, however, reminded the court that the crime was violent and caused serious emotional harm to Kardashian.
During the trial, Kardashian forgave the group’s leader after hearing his apology. She said, “I forgive you, but it doesn’t take away the trauma and how my life changed.”
Kardashian’s lawyers said she is now ready to put this painful chapter behind her and will continue her work to support criminal justice reform, especially for victims and those seeking second chances.
Most of the stolen jewelry, including the famous diamond ring, has never been recovered.
