PSG captain Marquinhos (31) could not hold back the tears as Parisians won their first-ever Champions League final in astonishing fashion. The Ligue 1 champions tore Simone Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri apart and recorded the biggest ever win in a UCL final courtesy of goals from Achraf Hakimi, Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu. Marquinhos, who joined PSG in 2013 and lived through the heartaches and near-misses of PSG in the Champions League, cut an emotional figure as his team’s long wait for Europe’s premier club competition was over.
Speaking to M6Marquinhos said that it was ‘the greatest day‘ of his football career. The 31-year-old centre-back spared a thought for his former teammates who fell in their quest to win the Champions League for PSG. ‘I think of all the players who have been here and who haven’t succeeded. My idol, Thiago (Silva), Lucas (Moura), Zlatan (Ibrahimovic), Cavani (Edinson), Di Maria (Angel). Many players have come through and they deserved it, too.’
Marquinhos said PSG suffered for 12 years as the Champions League trophy eluded them, until now. ‘It was a big goal. When we arrived, no one believed we could go this far. We’re bringing it home, I’m so happy!
