Suspense crime, Digital Desk : A fierce debate surrounding Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif’s biological sex has been reignited by alleged leaks from an Indian-based laboratory, Global Boxing Services (GLBS). The purported report, now circulating, reportedly suggests that Khelif has XY chromosomes and exhibited “supraphysiological” levels of testosterone, findings consistent with some Differences of Sex Development (DSD).
This “bombshell” leak places Khelif’s upcoming participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics under renewed scrutiny. Khelif was previously disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) from the final of the 2023 Women’s World Championships in New Delhi after tests reportedly indicated she possessed “characteristics of XY DSD.” The IBA has maintained its stance, implying that such characteristics could provide an unfair competitive advantage.
However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has cleared Khelif to compete in the Paris Games. The IOC’s eligibility rules differ from the IBA’s, and they have stated that Khelif was “unanimously cleared by their own medical experts months ago.” The IOC has also emphasized the importance of respecting medical confidentiality and Khelif’s right to participate.
Khelif herself has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, previously stating she is a victim of a “conspiracy” and that her tests have been normal. She has expressed her determination to compete and win in Paris.
The leaked report from GLBS, the authenticity of which is still being discussed, is said to detail specific testosterone readings. Researchers and experts in the field, such as Professor Joanna Harper, have previously commented on the broader issue, noting that elevated testosterone levels can offer significant performance advantages in sports.
This situation highlights the complex and often contentious intersection of biology, sport, and gender identity, particularly concerning athletes with DSD conditions. As the Paris Olympics approach, the debate over fair competition and inclusive eligibility criteria continues to intensify.
