Jasprit Bumrah's Participation in Question
The Indian cricket team has yet to determine the number of matches that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will participate in during the upcoming five-Test series in England. However, both captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir express confidence in the team's fast-bowling resources to manage his potential absence.
"We haven't decided which three matches he will play," Gambhir stated at a pre-departure press conference, as reported by a sports news outlet.
"We will discuss this with him, and it will depend on the series' progress. The outcomes of the matches will play a significant role in this decision, and I believe he understands that well," he added.
When the squad was announced last month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that medical advice suggested Bumrah should refrain from playing multiple consecutive Tests due to a stress reaction in his back, which he sustained during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney earlier this year.
Strong Fast-Bowling Lineup
The Test squad features Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh as the primary fast bowlers, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur included as seam-bowling all-rounders.
"We have selected a sufficient number of bowlers, and our pace attack is in excellent form to secure victories in Test matches from any situation," Gill remarked, as quoted by a sports news outlet.
"Having someone like Jasprit Bumrah is invaluable, and whenever he returns to play, it will be a significant boost for us. Nonetheless, we possess a well-rounded group of bowlers capable of delivering results for the team," he continued.
"As I mentioned during the Champions Trophy, which Bumrah missed while India triumphed, this situation allows others to step up. We have ample talent available, and while Bumrah is exceptional, we have quality players in the squad as well," he concluded.
A New Era in the World Test Championship
This series marks India's inaugural participation in the World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27 and is also the first since the retirements of key players Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli from Test cricket. Additionally, experienced pacer Mohammed Shami will not be part of the squad.
India will kick off the five-match series against England on June 20 at Headingley. The second Test is scheduled for July 2 at Edgbaston, followed by the third Test on July 10 at Lord's. The fourth Test will occur at Old Trafford starting July 23, and the series will conclude with the final match at The Oval on July 31.
Prior to the series, the team will engage in a four-day warm-up match against India A at Beckenham from June 13 to 16.
