
After almost four decades of giving us all a cult crime thriller Nayakan actor Kamal Hassan and filmmaker Mani Ratnam are here again with Thug Life which hit the big screen on June 5 2025. It has brought Mani Ratnams classic film back into the spotlight. Fans are again talking about the iconic scene featuring Kamal Haasan and Karthika. As nostalgia grows people are curious about Karthika who played Kamal’s daughter in the film and later left the industry. The film released in 1987 was based on the life of Mumbai underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar. In the film Kamal Haasan plays the role of a man living in Dharavi’s slums gained popularity by resolving problems of the local people of that area. Due to his illegal business he went on the government’s radar. Actress Karthika played the role of Kamal Haasan’s daughter in the film. One of the most memorable scenes shows her emotionally confronting her father with the line “Why Papa Why…” followed by a dramatic exchange of slaps. This scene is still loved by fans. According to several reports Karthika a former Malayalam and Tamil actress was active in films from 1979 to 1991. She retired from acting after marrying Dr. Sunil Kumar in 1988 and has since led a private life settling in the Maldives. Her son Vishnu is a veterinarian. Talking about Kamal Haasan’s last few films Indian 2 was a box office failure while Vikram his most recent hit had an incredible run grossing Rs 247.32 crore in India and Rs 414.43 crore globally.
