Political Controversy Surrounding Moitra
Moitra, known for her sharp critiques of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), faced allegations in 2023 regarding accepting cash and gifts for asking questions in the Lok Sabha. An investigation was initiated based on a complaint from BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who referenced a letter from Moitra's former partner, lawyer Jai Anant Dehadray. Dubey claimed that the lawyer provided irrefutable evidence of cash and gift transactions between Moitra and prominent businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for parliamentary questions.
Moitra denied the bribery allegations but admitted to sharing her Lok Sabha login details with Hiranandani's staff. In December 2023, she was expelled from the Lok Sabha over the bribery case related to asking questions. However, she made a comeback in the 2024 elections, winning her seat by a margin of over 56,000 votes.
