Team India’s two modern-day greats — Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli — could receive a grand farewell later this year, as per a Hindustan Times report.
After retiring from Test cricket in May and bidding adieu to T20Is following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, both players are now focused solely on ODIs. Cricket Australia is reportedly planning to honour them during India’s ODI tour of Australia in October.
Special Send-Off in the Works
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, followed by Virat Kohli on May 12.
Both players had already retired from T20 internationals after clinching the T20 World Cup title. With their Test careers ending quietly without official ceremonies, this upcoming ODI series in Australia could serve as a fitting farewell, particularly on Australian soil where both have left a significant mark.
The Indian team is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series in Australia in October 2025. If reports hold true, this tour may be organized as a farewell series for the two stalwarts. It could also be their final outing in Australia as players, making the occasion all the more emotional for fans and the global cricket community.
Despite stepping back from two formats, both Rohit and Kohli remain committed to ODI cricket. There are specualtions that they intend to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup, hoping to end their international careers on a high. Kohli showcased his form in IPL 2025, while Rohit played vital knocks late in the tournament, reinforcing their relevance in India’s 50-over plans.
As Cricket Australia gears up for a potential tribute, fans can expect an emotional and celebratory farewell for two of the greatest Indian cricketers of all time.
