It is said that Suraiya experienced love only once during her long film career. Their romance blossomed on set and they began spending a lot of time together. However news of their closeness eventually reached Suraiyas family leading to significant repercussions. Upon discovering their relationship Suraiyas family became furious and placed her under house arrest. As a result Suraiya was unable to meet or communicate with Dev Anand. Their different religious backgrounds fueled strong opposition to their relationship particularly from her grandmother. Dev Anand later recounted his relationship with Suraiya in his autobiography Romancing with Life. Suraiya and Dev Anand’s Marriage Plan According to media reports Dev Anand had planned to elope with Suraiya and marry her. However when Suraiyas grandmother learned about their plan Suraiyas family threatened to harm Dev Anand. As a result Suraiya backed off rejected his marriage proposal and kept her distance from him for the rest of her life. After their love story ended Dev Anand moved on and married his Baazi co-star Kalpana Karthik. Meanwhile Suraiya buried the pain of her unfulfilled love in her heart and spent her entire life alone. Suraiya passed away on January 31 2004 at Harkishandas Hospital in Mumbai at the age of 75 after being admitted for a week. She had been suffering from various ailments including hypoglycemia ischemia and insulinoma.
