Adam Hadwin returned to the field at the RBC Canadian Open this week, with hopes of putting a memorable incident from the tournament two years ago behind him. The 37-year-old pro from Moose Jaw secured a respectable T11 finish at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in 2023 alongside Harry Higgs, Jonathan Byrd, Harrison Endycott and Doug Ghim.

Despite missing out on glory that year, Hadwin was eager to join the celebrations of close friend and compatriot Nick Taylor - as he became the first Canadian to win the event in 69 years. Emotions surged as Taylor drilled a miraculous 72-foot eagle putt on a play-off of the 18th hole, denying Tommy Fleetwood of his first win on the Tour. The drama didn't stop there, though.

In a comical case of mistaken identity, Hadwin experienced a rough encounter when a security guard took him to the ground as he approached Taylor. The antics were immortalised in a slow-motion viral video capturing Hadwin dousing Taylor with champagne - seconds before being floored.

Taylor's caddie, Dave Markle, was caught on film desperately shouting "hey" to alert the guard as he identified the over enthusiastic celebrator. Reflecting on the incident, Hadwin told the media: "The moment itself and what Nick accomplished was amazing. I definitely did not want to be a part of what transpired after that, but it has been a lot of fun reading through and seeing what people had to say."

He added: "Honestly, I don't have any memory of what took place. I blacked out there for 15-20 seconds. At the time there was so much adrenaline running through, I don't think I would feel anything. I'm glad everything worked out. We can have a good laugh about it now. Just a big misunderstanding."

Fortunately, Hadwin didn't sustain significant injuries and displayed good humour by briefly using still images of the body check as his profile picture and banner on X (formerly Twitter). He also shared a photo of the incident with his feed, captioning it: "Put in the Louvre."

Meanwhile, the security guard involved has since shared his account of the event. In an interview with last year, the guard, who wished to remain anonymous, explained: "I was on the other side of Nick and his caddie which meant I had to come around him.

"There were a lot of people moving and I saw this person heading directly towards Nick. I saw it as if it was in slow motion, this guy coming towards Nick with a bottle and no credentials."

The guard also pointed out that it was a "soft takedown" and that Hadwin's feet "never left the ground," before revealing that Markle told him that he had just tackled one of Canada's top golfers. He added: "Bryan Crawford [RBC Canadian Open tournament director] came over and it was over quickly. We got up and laughed, said sorry to each other, and it was all over."
