Historical arrival at the world’s largest container ship MSC Irina Vizhinjam port

Vijhinjam : The historic arrival of MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship, will take place at the Vizhinjam International Port on Monday morning. Preparations have been completed to do a huge ship with 24,346 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) capacity and will remain on the berth till Tuesday. This will prove to be a milestone for the port, which was recently dedicated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the nation on 2 May.

MSc Irina has a length of 399.9 meters and width is 61.3 meters, which is about four times longer than a standard football ground designated by FIFA. The ship is specifically designed for large -scale container transport between Asia and Europe, which will lead to significant increase in trade routes and logistics efficiency.

The ship is making its first visit to the South Asian port, which reflects the ability of the Vizhinjam port to handle the ultra-Large container vessels (ULCV). Vizhinjam has previously welcomed icon-class ships such as MSC Türkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, which has emerged as the major center of the port of marine trade.

MSc Irina was launched in March 2023 and its first visit began in April 2023. It moves under the Liberian flag and can stack container up to 26 levels, which makes it unique in terms of container capacity. The ship has surpassed its predecessor OOCL Spain by a margin of 150 teu.

In terms of environment, this ship is also equipped with modern techniques, which reduces carbon emissions by 4% and is equipped with energy savings features, making it an example of durable marine practices.

Docking in MSc Irina’s Vizhinjam will not only increase the importance of port in global shipping networks, but will also symbolize environmental responsibility and innovation in the maritime industry.
