Mumbai: In the rich spiritual traditions of Hinduism, Pradosh Vrat holds a deeply sacred place. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this fast is observed on the Trayodashi tithi (13th lunar day) twice a month—once during the waxing moon and once during the waning moon. Devotees believe that observing this vrat with devotion and performing the associated rituals during Pradosh Kaal—the time around sunset—can fulfil heartfelt wishes and bring divine blessings.

Interestingly, the significance of Pradosh Vrat also changes depending on which day of the week it falls. Each weekday is associated with unique results, connecting the devotee to specific energies such as health, wealth, success, or peace. Let’s explore what each day’s Pradosh Vrat is believed to offer:

Sunday Pradosh Vrat (Ravi Pradosh)

Fasting on a Sunday is said to bless the devotee with excellent health and longevity. Since this day is linked to the Sun God (Surya Dev), those who observe Ravi Pradosh are also believed to gain honour, self-confidence, and increased vitality.

Monday Pradosh Vrat (Som Pradosh)

Som Pradosh, observed on Mondays, is considered especially effective for reducing the negative impact of the Moon and bringing mental peace. It is also believed to help childless couples, making it auspicious for those seeking to start a family.

Tuesday Pradosh Vrat (Bhaum Pradosh)

Known as Bhaum Pradosh, this Tuesday vrat is said to remove debt and disease. It is also considered powerful in pacifying the malefic effects of Mars (Mangal dosha) and boosting physical strength.

Wednsday Pradosh Vrat (Budh Pradosh)

Budh Pradosh enhances intelligence, learning, and educational success. It’s also beneficial for career progress and improving children’s academic abilities. Business owners may see growth and stability from observing this vrat.

Thursday Pradosh Vrat (guru Pradosh)

Guru Pradosh is associated with defeating enemies, increasing wealth and prosperity, and resolving ancestral property issues. It is also believed to enhance one’s fortune and bring long-term blessings.

Friday Pradosh Vrat (Shukra Pradosh)

Shukra Pradosh blesses devotees with peace and love in their married life. It promotes happiness, luxury, and material comfort. This vrat is especially good for those seeking harmony in relationships and abundance in life.

Saturday Pradosh Vrat (Shai Pradosh)

Shani Pradosh is highly recommended for those dealing with obstacles in job or business. It is believed to reduce the harmful effects of Shani dosha, Sade Sati, or Dhaiya and bring stability in professional life.

How to perform Pradosh Vrat Puja

On the day of the vrat, wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Begin the fast by meditating on Lord Shiva and taking a sankalp (vow). The main puja is done during Pradosh Kaal—roughly 45 minutes before and after sunset. Visit a Shiva temple and offer jal, milk, belpatra, dhatura, rice grains, incense, and lamps to the Shivling. Recite the Shiv Chalisa and read or listen to the Pradosh Vrat Katha. Conclude the ritual with an aarti and distribute prasad.

Why Pradosh Vrat Matters

Observed on the 13th day of each lunar fortnight, Pradosh Vrat is more than just a religious fast—it’s a gateway to inner peace and divine grace. The time of Pradosh Kaal is said to be when Lord Shiva is most pleased and receptive to prayers. Performing this vrat with faith is believed to remove sins, fulfil desires, and bestow spiritual merit (akshaya punya).
