Raj Kapoor is known for making many actors famous through his films and one of the most notable among them is Mandakini. When Mandakini appeared on screen in the film ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ she captivated the audience with her lake-like blue eyes. Although she featured in several films afterward she is still primarily remembered for this role. Interestingly before Mandakini was cast there was another actress who initially rejected the role even after 45 days of shooting prompting Raj Kapoor to seek her in the film. Padminis first role came in Raj Kapoor’s ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ where she played the character of a teenager named Rupa earning much praise from audiences. In 1985 Raj Kapoor decided to cast Padmini in his next project ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ after their previous successful collaboration. However upon reading the script she refused the offer stating “Uncle mujhe maaf kariye main ye nahin kar paungi” due to a kissing scene in the film that made her uncomfortable. Raj Kapoor was displeased with her decision and decided never to work with her again ultimately giving the role to Mandakini. After its release the film became a hot topic and garnered controversy for its bold scenes including the kissing scene. Nevertheless this did not hinder its success; it became one of the biggest blockbusters of that year propelling Mandakini to overnight stardom. When Padmini Kolhapure Talked About Rejecting Ram Teri Ganga Maili During a session of Rajshri Unplugged Padmini Kolhapure reflected on her decision to reject the film. She explained “When Raj uncle told me about the film and mentioned the kissing scene I had never done anything like that before so I didn’t want to participate in it. I had no issue working with Rajiv Kapoor but I was uncomfortable with kissing on screen. Thats why I chose to decline the offer.” Padmini had also mentioned that 45 days of shooting of Ram Teri Ganga Maili had been completed even after Raj Kapoor wanted to remove Mandakini and cast her.
