Indian-origin rapper Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, popularly known as Tommy Genesis, has come under heavy fire following the release of her latest music video True Blue. The clip, which quickly gained traction online, shows the Canadian musician painted blue, adorned in gold jewellery, and wearing a red bindi, resembling a Hindu goddess, while also using a Christian cross in provocative ways. The visuals have triggered strong backlash from both Hindu and Christian communities, with many accusing her of religious mockery.

Video Features Religious Imagery Deemed Offensive

In the controversial music video, Tommy Genesis is seen in striking visuals that many have found disturbing. What particularly outraged viewers was a moment where she appears to lick a cross and later pose with it near her backside. The artistic choices have led to an explosion of criticism across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where many labelled her actions as blasphemous.

One user wrote, “Her Indian descent makes it very likely that her makeup is deliberately done to hurt Hindu sentiments. Blasphemy (sic).” Another said, “Did you not see the cross coming out of her butt? She’s hurting everyone’s sentiments, maybe on purpose, to go viral. Cheap tactics (sic).”

Accusations of Provocation for Publicity

Several users accused the rapper of using sacred symbols merely to shock and stir outrage. “Her new song openly mocks both Hindu and Christian faiths. This is not creativity this is pure disrespect (sic),” one comment read. Critics argue the video crosses the line between artistic expression and cultural insensitivity, especially given her Indian roots.

Who Is Tommy Genesis?

Tommy Genesis, born in Vancouver to a Tamil-Swedish family, is known for her bold, genre-defying music. In 2016, she was dubbed “the internet’s most rebellious underground rap queen” by an international publication. Often describing herself as a “fetish rapper,” her work walks the edge of controversy and performance art.

As of now, Tommy Genesis has not issued any statement addressing the criticism. Meanwhile, calls for an apology or clarification continue to grow louder across digital platforms.
