Dame Prue Leith's son, Conservative MP Danny Kruger, has faced a barrage of criticism after he commented on the assisted dying law and remarked that his mother has not 'seen sense' and 'come round' to his 'point of view'.

His public disagreement with his mother, the Great British Bake Off star, led some viewers to brand him 'arrogant' and 'condescending'.

The celebrity chef's offspring has been actively campaigning against assisted dying, which would allow individuals over 18 who are terminally ill to seek medical help to end their lives.

Prue, however, holds a different stance from her son and has expressed her support for assisted dying, influenced by witnessing her brother David's struggles at the end of his life.

The bill in question has recently advanced, passing by 314 votes to 291, a majority of 23. It now proceeds to the House of Lords to undergo the same stages as in the Commons before returning to MPs for a final decision.

During an appearance on BBC's Newsnight, the 50-year-old MP was questioned about his conflicting views with his mother on the bill and its potential effect on their relationship, reports the Mirror.

He responded: "This debate actually has not broken any friendships for me at all, including of my own Party and certainly with my mum. We seem to be able to disagree well on this. I think these are very profound issues, both in conscience but also practicality".

He maintained: "I regret my mum has not seen sense and come round to my point of view, but I understand why she hasn't."

Social media erupted with critiques as Danny faced a fierce backlash, labelled 'arrogant' and 'condescending'. A social media user posted: "Breathtaking arrogance towards Prue Leith", while another commented: "How arrogant. Accusing his own mother of not seeing sense, because she doesn't share his views".

Another chipped in: "Massive man baby has a tantrum because a woman has her own point of view".

The loss of her brother David in 2012 was profound for Dame Prue, who thought of him as her 'best friend' and 'confidant'. Her fervent support for assisted dying emerged from witnessing David's painful battle with bone cancer.

Speaking with Sky News, she recounted David's 'absolute agony', his desperate pleas for help as his life ebbed away.

She conveyed how the pain relief was short-lived, only effective 'for a couple of hours', resulting in anguish for everyone, including nurses and family members. Dame Prue reflected: "For his family to be round while he was crying, begging to die, begging to be given more morphine, it was desperate to watch."

Honouring his memory, the well-loved GBBO judge expressed, "I'll miss him until the day I die".
