The results for the assembly by-elections held in five constituencies across Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, and Punjab are set to be announced today (June 23), as the counting of votes is currently taking place under tight security. Early trends indicate that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in Ludhiana West and Visavadar.
Sanjeev Arora Leads in Ludhiana West
In the by-election for the Ludhiana West assembly seat in Punjab, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora is ahead of his closest rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jeevan Gupta, by a margin of 3,060 votes according to initial counting results released on Monday. After three rounds of counting, Arora has secured 8,277 votes, while Gupta has received 5,217 votes. The Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Aashu, who was leading in the first two rounds, has now fallen to third place with 5,094 votes.
Other Candidates and Voter Turnout
Shromani Akali Dal's candidate Paropkar Singh Ghuman is currently in fourth place with 2,575 votes. A total of 14 candidates contested in this by-election. The vote counting began at 8 AM at a center established at Khalsa College for Women. This seat became vacant following the passing of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Goggi in January, necessitating the by-election. Voter turnout for this election was recorded at 51.33%, significantly lower than the 64% turnout during the 2022 assembly elections.
