Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of trying to distort history by using the 50th anniversary of the Emergency to target the Congress and divert attention from pressing national issues.
“PM Modi wants to observe the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as ‘Constitution Murder Day’. The irony is, those who had no role in India’s freedom struggle or in drafting the Constitution are now preaching about its sanctity,” Kharge said.
He alleged that the same groups who are now invoking the Constitution once "burned" copies of it at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan and "set effigies of Ambedkar, Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi on fire."
'BJP Shaken By Save Constitution Campaign'
The Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition claimed that the BJP is rattled by the Congress party’s year-long “Save the Constitution” campaign, which has gained ground among youth across the country.
“They’re raising the Emergency issue now—after fifty years—only to distract people because they have no answers on inflation, unemployment, or corruption,” he said. “This is political theatre to cover up their failures and lies.”
On the BJP's narrative around the Emergency, Kharge remarked, “That Emergency is over. What we are living in now is an undeclared Emergency. And even during the constitutional amendments, Indira Gandhi had supported Morarji Desai on key changes.”
He reiterated: “Yes, there was an Emergency—but it ended. What’s happening now is worse. It’s a systematic erosion of democratic freedoms.”
'Modi Using Drama To...'
Kharge also alleged that Prime Minister Modi is deliberately using distractions to suppress the energy and enthusiasm generated by Rahul Gandhi’s campaigns.
“Rahul Gandhi’s outreach has sparked a wave of hope among the youth. That’s why Modi is staging all this drama—to crush that momentum,” he said.
He further criticized the Prime Minister’s response to national crises, citing the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. “We demanded a special Parliament session to discuss the attack. He refused. He didn’t even attend the all-party meeting and instead chose to campaign in Bihar. This shows how disconnected he is from the country’s pain,” Kharge said.
'Modi Silent on Manipur'
“Manipur is burning, but the Prime Minister hasn’t bothered to visit. Are the people of Manipur not citizens of this country?” he asked.
Kharge also mocked Modi’s claim of India being a 'Vishwaguru' (global leader), saying, “You call yourself Vishwaguru, but cannot solve internal problems. Trump has said at least ten times that he resolved the India–Pakistan issue, yet Modi remains silent. What kind of Vishwaguru is afraid to respond?”
