In a remarkable revelation, Mumbai's verdant urban retreat, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), has unveiled a thrilling discovery— the Grey Francolin (Ortygornis pondicerianus), a ground-dwelling bird renowned for its distinctive calls and cryptic plumage. The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), a prominent nature conservation NGO headquartered in Mumbai, orchestrated an extensive Bird Count at SGNP in December, yielding not only the identification of 84 distinct bird species but also an unexpected encounter with a leopard along the park's two transects.


 

During the December Bird Count, the Shilonda Transect at SGNP reverberated with the unique calls of the Grey Francolin. This native Indian bird, known for its ground-dwelling habits and intricate plumage, made a captivating appearance, enchanting bird enthusiasts and volunteers alike. Adding to the excitement, a leopard made an unexpected cameo, spotted by vigilant volunteers near Jambhumaal.

The driving force behind these discoveries is the SGNP Bird Monitoring Programme, a comprehensive initiative coordinated by Dr. Raju Kasambe, Assistant Director of Conservation at BNHS, and Asif N. Khan from the BNHS Programmes Department. This ongoing citizen science program, officially named the "SGNP Bird Monitoring Programme," has been in action since February 2021. It entails monthly bird counts at various locations within SGNP and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, engaging BNHS members, dedicated bird watchers, and volunteers in systematic data collection.

These monthly counts contribute invaluable data to ongoing conservation efforts, shedding light on the avian biodiversity thriving in these vital ecosystems.
