Team India's iconic cricketer Virat Kohli has been a cornerstone of Indian cricket since making his international debut in 2008. Widely regarded as one of the greatest batters of the modern era, Kohli has delivered countless match-winning performances across all formats of the game.
Now, following his recent retirement from Test cricket, calls are growing to honor him with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.
Suresh Raina calls for Bharat Ratna for Kohli
During a show on Star Sports for the IPL 2025 clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), former India cricketer Suresh Raina voiced his support for Kohli to receive the Bharat Ratna. Speaking on Star Sports, Raina said: "Virat Kohli should be awarded the Bharat Ratna for his incredible contribution to Indian cricket."
If awarded, Kohli would become only the second cricketer to receive the honor after Sachin Tendulkar.
Virat Kohli has had an extraordinary journey in international cricket. Over a career spanning nearly 17 years, he has achieved several milestones:
Test Matches: 123 matches, 9230 runs
ODIs: 302 matches, 14,181 runs, including 50 centuries (most in the format)
T20 Internationals: 125 matches, 4188 runs, including 1 century and 38 fifties
Beyond individual records, Kohli has played a vital role in leading India to four ICC titles, cementing his legacy as one of the game's finest.
As Virat Kohli transitions out of the longest format, many believe that bestowing the Bharat Ratna upon him would be a fitting tribute to his immense impact on Indian cricket. With unmatched consistency, leadership, and dedication, Kohli’s name is now being discussed alongside legends deserving of the country’s highest honor.
