‘Queen of Couture Wedding Dress’ Lan Yu reportedly declines to design wedding dress for 18-year-younger wife of Barbie Hsu’s ex-husband

Renowned Chinese designer Lan Yu reportedly declined to design a gown for Mandy Ma, wife of Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, formerly married to actress Barbie Hsu.

According to Dimsum DailyLan—dubbed “The Queen of Couture Wedding Dresses” by local media—is renowned for designing gowns for high-profile celebrity clients. It is reported that she declined to design for Ma because she is a fan of Hsu.

Lan, 39, made history as the first Chinese designer invited to Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week in 2014 and debuted her ready-to-wear collection at New York Fashion Week in 2016.

Wang, 44, and Ma, 26, held their wedding ceremony on May 17 at the historic Prince Jun’s Mansion Hotel in Beijing, a 400-year-old classical Chinese courtyard residence. The ceremony was described as an intimate gathering attended only by close family and friends. Ma received lavish gifts as part of her wedding dowry.

The couple officially registered their marriage in May 2024. Wang was married to Barbie Hsu from 2011 until their divorce in 2021. Hsu remarried her ex-boyfriend, South Korean musician DJ Koo, in Feb. 2022.

Hsu passed away at age 49 in Japan earlier this year due to complications from pneumonia. She and Wang shared two children, aged 11 and nine. Reports indicate that Ma has built a close bond with the children and is actively involved in their upbringing.
