In view of the youthful set of players chosen for the series that begins on June 20 at Headingley, veteran top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara feels that the next five-match Test tour of England is a turning point for Indian cricket.

Following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India has a new vice-captain in Rishabh Pant and a new captain in Shubman Gill as the young team enters a new era of Test cricket. India has only ever won three of 19 series against England; the most recent triumph came in 2007 when Rahul Dravid was captain.

“A team’s perseverance and flexibility have always been tested in the India-England Test series. India has only won three of the 19 series that have been played on English soil in the last century, which shows how difficult this match has been for us.

“With a youthful and vibrant team, this trip marks a major shift for Indian cricket. “I’m excited to see how this group steps up and establishes new standards for generations to come,” Pujara added.

The remaining matches of the India-England Test series will be played at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. A new ICC World Test Championship cycle for India also begins with the series against England, captained by Ben Stokes.

Irfan Pathan supported Gill’s team to take on the formidable opponents they would face during the England trip.

In England, test cricket is the pinnacle of evaluating a player’s ability, disposition, and character. “Team India is not just continuing a tradition, but they are writing a new chapter in our cricketing history with a new generation stepping up,” Pathan said.

“Ground Tumhara, Jeet Hamari” encapsulates this team’s fearlessness and tenacity flawlessly. “This team has the talent and tenacity to tackle the most difficult tasks and motivate a fresh generation of supporters nationwide,” he said.
