Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Heads up, tech users! The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), our national cybersecurity agency, has sounded a serious alarm about multiple high-severity vulnerabilities affecting a wide range of popular devices, including Apple iPhones and iPads, Android smartphones and tablets, and certain Microsoft Windows systems.
These aren’t minor glitches. The vulnerabilities flagged are rated ‘high severity,’ meaning they could potentially allow attackers to remotely execute malicious code, bypass security features, access sensitive information, or even cause your device to crash or stop working altogether. Essentially, hackers could gain significant control over your device if these flaws are exploited.
For Apple users, CERT-In specifically pointed out vulnerabilities in iOS versions prior to 17.4.1, iPadOS versions prior to 17.4.1, macOS Sonoma versions before 14.4.1, and Safari versions before 17.4.1. If your Apple device hasn’t been updated recently, it’s likely at risk.
Android users aren’t spared either. The agency highlighted numerous vulnerabilities detailed in the Android Security Bulletin for March 2024. These affect various components within the Android operating system, including the framework, system, Google Play system updates, and components from chip makers like Qualcomm. Given the diversity of Android devices, it’s crucial to check for updates specific to your phone or tablet manufacturer.
CERT-In also highlighted issues within certain Microsoft Windows components, including vulnerabilities in software like MediaWiki that might be running on Windows systems. These could lead to unauthorized access or disruption if not addressed.
What Should You Do Right Now?
The most crucial step you can take is to UPDATE YOUR DEVICES IMMEDIATELY.
- Apple Users: Go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone or iPad. For Macs, go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Android Users: The path may vary slightly, but generally, go to Settings > System > System update (or Software update).
- Windows Users: Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date (Settings > Windows Update) and check for updates for any specific software mentioned, like MediaWiki, if you use it.
Beyond immediate updates, CERT-In advises practicing good cyber hygiene:
- Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts.
- Be cautious about clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.
- Regularly back up your important data.
Don’t delay these updates. Protecting your digital life and personal information from these newly discovered threats depends on acting swiftly.
