Defense partnership between China and Pakistan is going to deepen, which is reported to be a matter of concern for Indian security agencies and defense analysts. Such reports have been revealed that China is going to give Pakistan its most advanced fifth generation stealth fighter aircraft ‘J-35A’. If this is true, the aircraft will make an unprecedented increase in Pakistan’s aerial strength, equipped with a 400-km deadly range PL-17 missiles and can be a major step to change the military balance of South Asia.
This ‘J-35A’ aircraft is an advanced category ‘stealth’ (which does not easily come in the grip of radar) fighter jet. The PL-17 air-to-air missile coming with it is known for its long ‘Beyond Visual Range’ (BVR) capacity, which can target enemy aircraft even while staying away from their eyes. It is believed that Pakistan can include 30 to 40 such aircraft in its Air Force, which will increase its air superiority.
Pakistan’s current fighter fleet is made up of American F-16 and JF-17 Thunder aircraft of China-Pakistan. However, the J-35A is a separate league aircraft capable of escaping the radar. In such a situation, India will get the challenge of how it will protect its sky and how to respond to this new aerial threat.
What will be India’s answer?
India currently has powerful capabilities such as state-of-the-art Rafale fighter aircraft and S-400 aerial defense system purchased from Russia. Rafael is already considered a ‘game-changer’, but India will have to increase its capabilities faster to combat the 5th-generation stealth jet like ‘J-35A’ received by Pakistan. India is working on programs such as its indigenous ‘Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft’ (AMCA) and ‘Tejas’, but it is still time for them to be operational.
Defense experts believe that India will have to further strengthen its air defense systems and also to sharpen its intelligence capabilities, so that the activities of the enemy’s stealth aircraft can be accurately detected. This development will present a new strategic challenge to the Indian Air Force, requiring quick and effective plans.
