As Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s Test captain for the five-match Test series against England, former cricketer Yograj Singh believes Gill needs to lead the team form up-front, and carry the team with him, just like legend Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup.

Indian team is currently going through a transition phase as veteran players R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retired from the format within last 6 months. The selectors have hence named young players to fill up for the void created.

The Shubman Gill-led side is currently facing England for a five-match Test series, which marks the beginning of World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for both the teams. The first match is being played in Leeds, and Yograj outlined the key points that India’s youngest red-ball captain needs to consider in order to reach great success.

As per Yograj Singh, Shubman Gill must set his individual score target to a high number and carry the team with him. Yograj also predicted the series outcome and believes the Indian team can potentially conquer England for the first time since 2007.

A few days ago, I was talking to Yuvraj Singh about Abhishek (Sharma) and Shubman Gill. Yuvraj said he would have to lead from the front. As Shubman Gill goes out to bat, he has to stay at the crease for the maximum time. When a captain leads from the front, and scores run. It is important for Shubman to set a target of 100, 200 or 300. He has to lead from the front. He also has to take everyone forward together, just like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. I believe India will win the series“Yograj told ani.
